I'm excited to present a lecture recital at the first Transplanted Roots Percussion Research Symposium! The topic will be the SpectraSurface and my experience in the creation-performance of Unsounding Objects.

    Abstract

Learning to play the SpectraSurface: a novel digital percussion instrument

This lecture recital presents the SpectraSurface, a digital musical instrument for a contemporary percussionist created by Zachary Hale, Ian Hattwick, and Preston Beebe at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music, Media, and Technology (CIRMMT).  Whereas most digital percussion instruments commonly rely on the characteristics of velocity or attack through the MIDI protocol, our goal was to create an instrument that would respond to the timbral characteristics of found objects excited by contemporary percussion techniques (bowing, motors, superball, natural processes, rubbing, scratching, etc.).  We ultimately learned through exploration that subtleties and somewhat inaudible sounds to the human ear could control sound synthesis in a meaningful way using the SpectraSurface.  I discuss how the use of audio feature extraction in the SpectraSurface changed both my performance technique as well as my way of using auditory feedback from different sources (acoustic and electronic) to influence my playing.  The collaborative process in a technological atmosphere is also discussed.  Excerpts from the pieces Unsounding Objects no.1-2 are presented as corresponding musical references and examples.

Terroir New Music, in collaboration with c.1949, is proud to present a special evening of new music by local composers paired with local craft beers.

The title for this concert, “starter” alludes to the culture needed to start the fermentation process of many foods and alcohols (such as sourdough bread, or solera-aged liquors). We find it fitting, as this concert is the “starter” for what we hope is many awesome concerts, seasons, and collaborations for years to come.

Featuring music by Zachary Hale, Sean Hamilton, Susanna Hancock, G. Blake Harrison-Lane, Tyler Kline, and Baljinder Sekhon.

C.1949 will be open 4 PM to 1 AM the day of this event. "Doors" for this event open at 7:00 PM. Music begins at 8:00 PM. Beer flights will be served in groups of three; the concert will feature two parts with a brief intermission for refilling purposes. The concert will take place in c.1949’s outdoor patio area, so be ready to enjoy some new music and craft brews in the beautiful Florida twilight!

Price of ticket includes admission to the concert, plus a specially curated flight of six beers. Each featured beer has been selected to correspond with a piece of music on the program, and is meant to be enjoyed alongside that piece while it is being performed. All ages are welcome; if you are under 21, ticket price includes two complimentary non-alcoholic beverages. Kids age 10 and under get in for free.

Tickets may be purchased via Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/terroir-001-starter-tickets-32799507209

***When you preorder your ticket, you will also receive a limited-edition Terroir logo pint glass, which you may pick up the night of the concert.***

Donations are welcome. When you make a donation to Terroir New Music in advance, you help support future events like this one. Your name will also be acknowledged in the program.

Please drink responsibly. We encourage concertgoers to bring a designated driver, if necessary; concertgoers are also encouraged to hang out with the composers and performers after the show.

Full program and Beer List coming soon!
